Killing for Jesus’s Sake?

A recent post on Facebook prompted us to write this.

We do not ordinarily respond to individual posts. Your recent post did catch our attention.

You wrote recently that “Christianity is one of the greatest lies told to humanity. It has through the centuries been responsible for the death of Millions.”

There is no question that some very bad things have been done in the name of Jesus Christ. The Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the Trail of Tears, just to name a few.

The people who did those things in Jesus’ name gave Christians a bad name. They claimed to be Christians, but in fact were not at all. It would be like a mass shooter saying “I am a follower of Fred” when they are probably doing the exact opposite of what Fred endorses.

A central tenet of Christianity is to treat people with kindness and love. This was not the case in the incidents mentioned above. It is also not the case, in our estimation, with the way immigrants are being treated by the U.S. today. In fact, the Bible has some choice words for those who are not welcoming to immigrants.

It is true that we represent the overwhelming minority of Christians. We would like to think that we have our religion right, even if we are a very few. Incidentally, it is not unlike the Muslim religion. It is true that there are billion “peaceful” Muslims, but the few that are the terrorists, in our estimation, have their religion correct. At its core, Christianity is supposed to be a religion of peace toward nonbelievers, whereas at its core, the Muslim religion endorses violence and intolerance toward other believers. In Christianity like in Islam, only a small number of people practice their religion correctly.

We hope this helps. And we hope you will give Christianity another look and not let the actions people take in the name of Jesus allow you to taint your view.
